GOP senators on Wednesday said President Donald Trump should immediately rescind DACA, or allow Congress to revisit the issue in 2018.
Trump has repeatedly promised to end the program that protects nearly 800,000 young people brought to the United States illegally as children.
Trump said in February that he would consider ending DACA in the event he becomes president, but it’s unclear how he’ll implement that.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Thursday that Trump should “rethink” his decision, but did not specify how.
“The president should immediately end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program,” McConnell said in a statement.
The House is expected to take up the DACA program’s fate next week, but the Senate is expected later this month to pass a bill that would re-examine the program, with the goal of making it permanent.
